Orthodontic treatment is an important investment in your oral health, but occasional issues can arise during the process. One of the most common orthodontic emergencies involves a broken bracket or protruding wire. While these problems can be uncomfortable and frustrating, they are usually not serious if addressed promptly and properly.
If you experience a broken bracket or wire, knowing what steps to take can help protect your treatment progress and keep you comfortable until you can visit our office. We have two office locations in 5th Street and Riverside. You can book your appointment at any of our office here:

Let’s look at what causes these orthodontic issues, what you should do at home, and when it is time to seek professional care.
Why Do Brackets and Wires Break?
Braces are designed to withstand the normal forces of everyday use, but they are not indestructible. Several situations can cause a bracket to loosen or a wire to shift out of place.
Common causes include:
- Eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
- Biting directly into foods such as apples or corn on the cob
- Accidental impacts during sports or physical activities
- Playing with braces using your fingers or tongue
- Natural wear and tear during orthodontic treatment
Even when patients follow instructions carefully, brackets and wires can occasionally become damaged. The important thing is to address the issue quickly to avoid unnecessary discomfort or treatment delays.
How to Tell If a Bracket Is Broken
A bracket is the small attachment bonded to the front of each tooth. When a bracket becomes loose, it may slide along the wire or feel unstable when touched.
You may notice:
- A bracket moving out of position
- Discomfort while eating or brushing
- A bracket that appears detached from the tooth
- Irritation to the lips or cheeks
Although a loose bracket is not usually an emergency, it should be repaired as soon as possible. A bracket that is no longer attached properly cannot apply the precise pressure needed to move teeth into their correct positions.
What to Do If a Bracket Breaks
If a bracket comes loose, try to remain calm. In most cases, the bracket remains attached to the archwire and does not completely fall out.
Here are a few steps you can take:
Leave the Bracket Attached
Do not attempt to remove the bracket yourself. If it is still connected to the wire, leave it in place until you can be evaluated by our team.
Use Orthodontic Wax
If the loose bracket is rubbing against your cheek, lip, or gums, place orthodontic wax over it. This creates a protective barrier and helps reduce irritation.
Avoid Hard Foods
Stick to softer foods and avoid anything that could place additional stress on your braces until the bracket is repaired.

What to Do If a Wire Is Poking or Broken Before Visiting The Dental Office
Orthodontic wires guide the movement of your teeth throughout treatment. Occasionally, a wire may shift, bend, or break, causing discomfort.
A protruding wire can irritate the inside of your mouth and make eating or speaking uncomfortable.
If you experience a poking wire, consider the following steps:
Apply Orthodontic Wax
Orthodontic wax is often the quickest and most effective temporary solution. Cover the end of the wire to prevent it from rubbing against soft tissues.
Carefully Reposition the Wire
In some situations, a wire can be gently moved back into place using a clean cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. Do not force the wire if it resists movement.
Rinse with Warm Salt Water
If irritation has already developed, rinsing with warm salt water may help soothe the affected tissues and promote comfort.
Don’t Ignore a Broken Bracket or Wire
A broken bracket or poking wire can be uncomfortable, but it does not have to disrupt your orthodontic journey. Knowing how to manage the situation at home and seeking timely professional care can help prevent further problems and keep your treatment on schedule.
If you experience a damaged bracket, loose wire, or any other orthodontic concern, it is important to have it evaluated as soon as possible. Our team can identify the issue, make the necessary repairs, and ensure your smile continues progressing toward the results you want.
